Dr Ian R Young OBE
Award of Honorary Degree of Doctor of Engineering

Ian R Young OBE has served Scotland’s cast-metal industry for more than 50 years.

Chair of the Board at Archibald Young Ltd, Ian is proud to be the fifth generation of his family to have worked in a foundry in Kirkintilloch. In 1969, when Ian joined the business his father had founded a decade earlier, he was one of just six full-time employees. Today the group employs 80 people in Kirkintilloch, Motherwell and Teesside and has a multi-million pound annual turnover trading around the world.

Ian is committed to his industry and his community and has served organisations including the Incorporation of Hammermen of Glasgow, the Trades House of Glasgow, Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire, Semta and Metcom Ltd. In addition, he is nurturing the next generation of Scottish entrepreneurs, organising and sponsoring student competitions.

A talented athlete, Ian has represented Scotland and graduated from Edinburgh University with two degrees and five blues. He was awarded an OBE in 2006 for services to engineering in Scotland and is a Fellow of the Institute of Cast Metal Engineers, of which he is a former president. Ian was most recently awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship, Rotary International’s highest accolade, for his 38 years of service to charity.
