For Stewart Rutherford, graduating from Glasgow Caledonian was just the beginning of a lifelong relationship with the University.
Two decades on from attaining his degree in Building Surveying, he continues to carry GCU with him – in both heart and workforce.
His education combined with his dedication to the industry has seen Stewart work his way up to his position as Managing Director at PMP – a property consultancy company where nearly 70% of employees are GCU graduates.
It’s a testament not only to the University, but to Stewart’s commitment to giving back:
“So many folk have taken me under their wing over the course of my career. They did not need to do that, but they did, and that certainly helped me become a better person and a better building surveyor.
“I now have the greying hairs and experience to be able to help others as they find their way in their respective careers. I feel that it is only right that I do the same and give back too.”
Stewart admits there’s something particularly special about being able to take GCU students under his wing:
“I’m privileged to now be in a position where I’m leading a business. Many of the team at PMP started their careers at GCU, and it is nice to be able to give others the opportunity to start their journey in this fantastic institution.
“There is also that wee bit of sentimentality as well, given that I started at GCU too. During my time there, I met many new folk, many of whom I’m still in regular contact with.
“It also instilled a passion for Building Surveying and the built environment that I still hold to this day. Without that initial grounding and the development of the passion, I’m not sure where I might be today.”
His belief in the University and its talented graduates led Stewart to become a donor and support future careers:
“For me it is about providing an opportunity to someone that might not otherwise have been able to go to university.
“By being a donor, I always hope we might just find that wee hidden gem that becomes a future superstar in our industry.
“I would love that to happen, and to know that you have played even a small part in developing that superpower is what makes it all worthwhile.”
