Social Work

Former GCU lecturer

Although neither studied at GCU themselves, Professor George and Dorothy Irving have found a true sense of belonging as donors at Glasgow Caledonian University.

What began in 1993 with George taking on a visiting lecturer role in Social Work soon grew into a deep and long-lasting connection with the University as he and his wife Dorothy were warmly welcomed into the GCU community.

Over the years, the pair have become fervently involved in supporting the University’s mission for the Common Good, lending their time and generosity to initiatives that reflect their shared values:

“Experience gained from almost forty years of social work service reaffirmed for us of the importance of access to higher education to reduce inequality and increase life opportunities.

“GCU’s commitment to the “Common Good” is doing just that in so many ways, such as the Common Good Fund, and the innovative Caledonian Club which covers a school we both attended.

“We have both witnessed the remarkable development of GCU in capacity, range and status to now be the Top Modern University in Scotland. It has been a privilege and a great pleasure to us to have been involved.”

Most notably, Professor George and Dorothy Irving have been dedicated supporters of both the Common Good Fund and Magnus Magnusson Award, providing scholarships and awards for students to ensure everyone has equal access to opportunities in higher education.

Of all their involvements at GCU, the couple agree championing students has been the most “memorable and rewarding”.

“We had the pleasure of meeting Magnus Magnusson KBE when he was Principal and have enthusiastically supported the Awards established in 2007 in his honour.

“We have attended every award ceremony since and have invariably been immensely impressed and greatly encouraged by the enthusiasm, commitment, drive and range of initiatives displayed by successful applicants. Truly all in accord with the Common Good.”

As Glasgow Caledonian University prepares to celebrate its 150th Anniversary, Professor George and Dorothy’s support remains as strong as ever:

“Although we both studied elsewhere, our loyalties lie with GCU. Lasting friendships have been formed, and it has given us a great interest in our retirement attending events, contributing where we can and enjoying true friendship.”

“We will continue to support Glasgow Caledonian wherever and whenever we can and look forward to engaging in the 150th anniversary celebrations. There is much to look forward to in such a progressive university.”

We believe that in giving back to GCU, we’ve received far more in return.
