Aim
The project aims to provide a framework upon which to tackle the root causes of poverty. The priorities are:
1. Preventing people from falling into poverty.
2. Providing targeted support for people struggling in poverty.
3. Campaigning for long term change in Government policies and practices.
Summary
The Salford Tackling Poverty Strategy takes a systematic approach to tackling poverty and inequality, highlighting poverty as a societal rather than an individual issue. The strategy recognises the importance of a cooperative approach and coordinating the city-wide efforts in tackling poverty. Developed in extensive cooperation with the Salford Poverty Truth Commission and other local organisations and groups, the strategy works to implement long term change and policies in practice. Prioritising both preventing people from falling into poverty with provision of jobs and good quality housing and providing targeted support for people in poverty, the strategy adapts to emerging situations such as the cost-of-living crisis and the pandemic.
What difference does it make?
As a result of implementing the ‘No One Left Behind’ strategy in Salford, services across the city have adopted tackling poverty as a starting point and a core commitment embedded in their work. As a result of implementing the strategy, Salford has seen, for example, gains in benefits claimed, a reduction in the number of those sleeping rough, and an increase in the number of Living Wage employers in the city, among other positive impacts.
Key take-aways
- Ensuring a coordinated delivery of the strategy through providing avenues for communication between services contributes to maintaining a holistic approach.
- A holistic approach for the strategy ensures people coming in for short term support are directed to long term support. Salford CC asserts that the strategy has lasting impacts on the residents.
- A continuous approach to re-development of the strategy is important to ensure the strategy adequately reacts to the changing socio-economic and political conditions to accurately reflect the challenges of those it aims to support.
