Electrical and electronic engineering is at the heart of the technologies shaping how we live, work and connect. It focuses on how electricity is used to control, process and transmit information. This powers everything from smartphones and medical equipment to communication networks and smart systems.
On our MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering course, you’ll learn to design intelligent, connected and sustainable systems.
You’ll explore key areas such as:
- embedded systems
- communications
- robotics
- control engineering
- power systems.
Alongside this, you’ll build strong foundations in mathematics, programming and electronics. These skills help you solve complex engineering problems with confidence.
Teaching is practical and hands-on. You’ll learn through lab work, team projects and real-world challenges that bring theory to life. You’ll also explore emerging areas such as data analysis and intelligent systems, including technologies that connect and share data to improve efficiency.

- wearable tech
- connected cars
- city-wide systems.
We work closely with employers and professional bodies to make sure what you learn is up to date and help you build the skills employers want. You’ll benefit from guest talks, industry input and opportunities to engage with live industrial projects. There is also the option to take a year-long industrial placement or study abroad, helping you broaden your experience and build global perspectives.
By the time you graduate, you’ll have the confidence, technical ability and professional awareness to succeed in a fast-moving global industry.
Please note: This course follows the same structure as the four-year BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering course. However, it has an additional year of advanced study in Year 5, where you will complete further specialist modules and a major project, provided you meet the required criteria. Understanding module information
For most undergraduate courses, Level 1 modules are studied in Year 1, Level 2 modules in Year 2 etc.
If your course includes optional modules, these may be available at different Levels and in different years of study. The availability of optional modules may vary from year to year and will depend on factors such as student demand, timetabling and staffing.
If you study part time, you will normally complete modules in Level order, but it may take more than one academic year to complete a Level.
If you join the course through Advanced Entry, you will normally begin at a higher Level, depending on your point of entry, before progressing through the remaining Levels of the course.
