Summary
The Peterhead Rapid Relief Team Homelessness, Poverty and Hardship Project has worked to eradicate poverty and hardship in Peterhead since 2022. Working alongside the local fire station, school, and police station the Rapid Relief Team supports the community with donations of non-perishable food boxes. Increases in service provision, caused by heightened cases of poverty during school holidays pushed the Fire Service, local community groups, and the Rapid Relief Team to introduce a breakfast club. Additionally, the Peterhead team expanded its remit by working alongside Men United, a local men’s mental health charity. Funding for project development was provided by the Brethren Christian Church driving positive change within the community.
What difference does it make?
Observing the joy in children and families within the breakfast club, or any events organised by the Rapid Relief Team, shows signs of the positive impact the project is having within the Peterhead community.
Key take-aways
- Breaking Down Barriers: Having open conversations with a variety of stakeholders is critical for success. Being able to sit around the table and having a candid conversation with different partners that are involved in the project helped to bring the project together. If this was proving to be difficult then the project would never have been able to go ahead.
- Everyone Working Together to Make Changes: All volunteers involved have the same passion to make a difference to people’s lives. Getting their heads down and working hard as a team to pull off the project was hugely valuable and did not add on any unnecessary problems.
- Welcoming New Volunteers to Help Within the Project: Growing number of volunteers has helped run the project successfully. Having a range of volunteers on hand to feed and support the community is valuable. Extending the number of helpers is critical to running the project due to everyone using their own spare time.
