Overview

Biomedical scientists carry out laboratory tests on specimens sent for analysis by GPs and other healthcare professionals.

Biomedical Science is vital for the clinical diagnosis of disease and accurate treatment of patients and the operation of the NHS and other health-related industries.

As a Glasgow Caledonian Pathways student you'll study an HNC Applied Science at Glasgow Kelvin College over the first year, in preparation for transfer to the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science course in Year 2. You will then complete the Year 2, 3 and 4 modules from the main course.

We offer the only Biomedical Science course with placement in Glasgow that is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and accredited by the Institute  of Biomedical Science (IBMS). Re-accreditation of the Biomedical Science course from the Institute of Biomedical Science is being sought in 2025. The Biomedical Science course is also accredited by the Royal Society of Biology.

As a graduate of the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science Pathways, you'll also be able to gain employment as a Biomedical Scientist once you have undertaken additional hospital laboratory training and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Graduates of the BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science degree are eligible to apply for HCPC Registration on successful completion of the course. For further details on routes to HCPC registration, see the Become a Biomedical Scientist page on the Institute of Biomedical Science website.

You'll gain the knowledge and skills needed to become a Biomedical Scientist, including cellular pathology, clinical biochemistry, haematology, and clinical microbiology. A key strength of the course is a work-based placement in a Scottish hospital by selection.
