Dr Nikhil Sharma graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences with a bachelor's of Optometry in 2016. He came to Glasgow Caledonian University in 2016 to pursue a master’s degree in clinical ophthalmology and vision research, which he completed in 2017. Nikhil returned to GCU in 2019 to undertake a PhD, where he investigated the role of Demodex mites on ocular surface inflammation.
In 2023, Nikhil was appointed as a Lecturer in Vision Sciences. His undergraduate teaching includes the biology of the human eye, refraction and binocular vision, as well as contact lens studies. He serves as the module leader for Diagnostic Techniques. Furthermore, Nikhil is involved in postgraduate teaching, which includes international contact lens studies and advanced clinical investigations. He also supervises projects for final-year undergraduate, master's, and PhD students.
Nikhil's research interests focus on the anterior eye and ocular surface, covering topics such as dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction, Demodex blepharitis, and the tear film. He is an active member of the global tear research network.
