Julia Zauner is a Lecturer in Criminology and a PhD researcher in the Department of Social Sciences. She teaches on a range of social science modules, specifically criminology, including research methods at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Her research interest focuses on the intersections of criminology, victimology, and gender studies with a particular focus on gender-based violence in the digital age. Her research explores topics such as sexual abuse, justice, policing, cybercrime, queer theory, and critical victimology.

Julia’s PhD research centres on image-based sexual abuse victimisation in Scotland. This includes the harms of image-based sexual abuse, criminal justice responses, and justice understandings. Her work is the first study on image-based sexual abuse to specifically centre Scottish experiences.

Julia is currently involved in a range of other research projects pertaining to gender-based violence. Her research experience heavily informs her current teaching focusing on conceptualising harms and (non) statutory responses to GBV.

Julia is the current Internal and External Engagement Lead for GCU’s Social, Criminal and Legal Justice Research Group. She also hosts Gender Gab, a podcast series on gender and abuse where she is joined by fellow scholars, colleagues, & students.
