Catriona MacLennan

Department of Vision SciencesCatriona MacLennan is a Lecturer and Programme Lead for BSc Ophthalmic Dispensing Management. She joined the Vision Sciences Department in 2019 as a Lecturer and became programme lead in 2021. She qualified as an Optometrist in 2009 and after initially working in clinical practice across Scotland and England, she returned to university and completed her PhD at the University of Plymouth in 2015 titled ‘Investigation and Assessment of Astigmatism in Pseudophakia’. After working as a lecturer at the University of Plymouth for four years, she moved to GCU to take up her current post.
After her initial research into pre and post-surgical optical correction and Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) used in cataract surgery, her work has moved on to investigation of patient experience and education provided pre-surgery, particularly concentring on the refractive management options available to patients.
Presently Catriona currently co-chairs the Opticians Academic School Council (OASC) and is working with other institutions on the development of support for Dispensing Opticians across the UK.
Catriona teaches across all three undergraduate programmes in the Vision Science Suite. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and member of the College of Optometrists
