Founder of FìorDára

MSc International Fashion Marketing

This month, we’re shining the spotlight on GCU alumna Tolulope Akinwumi, Founder of FìorDára, a Scottish–African fusion fashion brand creating modern clothing rooted in real cultural storytelling over following trends.

The name FìorDára is a dance between worlds. Fìor, from Gaelic, means true or genuine, and Dára, from Yoruba, means beautiful or unique. Together, they tell a story of identity, heritage and bold creativity.

FìorDára fuses African and Scottish fabrics with structured tailoring to create wearable pieces that honour heritage while feeling contemporary.

“The idea came from personal experience of living between cultures and not seeing fashion that truly reflected that blend. I wanted to create a brand that celebrates both heritage and modern identity in one garment.”

Alongside co-founder and husband Jeff, Tolulope has grown FìorDára into a distinctive brand that blends African and Scottish fabrics with a focus on quality craftsmanship. Successfully launching FìorDára at Scotland Fashion Week, and making sales, is their biggest success to date. They also credit their GCU Idea to Impact Build Award as being a key step in their journey.

“We were recognised through the GCU Entrepreneurial Idea to Impact Competition, receiving a Build Award, which validated our vision.”

Setting up a fashion brand isn’t easy, especially when you are committed to creating high-quality, handcrafted designs that tell a deeper story.

“Our main challenges are increasing visibility, building a loyal customer base, and scaling production without compromising the quality that defines FìorDára.”

Tolulope recognises the support that the Entrepreneurial Hub offers, having recently met with Entrepreneurial Hub Ambassadors Aquarius Creative for tailored advice and guidance.

“I joined the GCU Entrepreneurial Hub to gain mentorship, resources, and connections to help FìorDára grow. The most attractive benefits are guidance on business strategy, access to funding competitions, and the opportunity to network with like-minded entrepreneurs, all of which support turning our creative vision into a sustainable brand.”
