Tom has conducted research as part of the European Commission Leonardo Lifelong Learning Programme funded project ‘SALM’ (Skills and Labour Market to Raise Youth Employment) which investigated policies and instruments across six European contexts designed to address youth unemployment. Tom was also researcher for the UK case on the Horizon 2020 funded project ‘TransSOL’ (Transnational Solidarity in Times of Crisis) which examined the attitudes and practices of solidarity across eight European countries with the unemployed/precariously employed, disabled people and migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. He has also been conducting research as part of the Horizon 2020 funded project ‘SIRIUS’: Skills and Integration of Migrants, Refugees and Asylum Applicants in European Labour Markets) which seeks to establish a systematic body of evidence on the potential for the labour market integration of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers across seven European countries. Tom has also been working as the UK researcher as part of a comparative project funded by the Swiss Network for International Studies on the gig economy which examines the prospects for social dialogue across four European countries in the context of how technology and digital platforms are shaping the future of work.
Tom has published his research on youth employment, social innovation, social movements, transnational solidarity and Brexit in peer reviewed journals. He has also contributed chapters on post-crisis solidarity, welfare policies and austerity to a number of edited collections. Tom has also published a range of reports stemming from the large comparative projects in which he has been involved. He is also peer reviewer for various journals and is a member of national and international research networks covering areas of employment, social policy, social movements, public management and the social economy.
Tom has previously taught on modules across policymaking, political theory and social movements. He is currently module tutor on the MSc Social Innovation.
Tom is a supervisor for David Philip’s PhD project which examines public viewpoints on a Universal Basic Income in Scotland.
