The Institution of Railway Operators

The Institution of Railway Operators (IRO) exists to advance and promote the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the railways, by improving the technical and general skills, knowledge and competence of those engaged in the operation of the railways.

The IRO, in conjunction with Glasgow Caledonian University, offers a distance learning professional development programme relating to Railway Operations Management.

The programme is structured over 3 levels: Certificate, Diploma and Degree.

Developed and tutored by industry professionals, these academic programmes will help you develop skills that employers value, such as problem-solving, creative thinking and self-discipline. Each course explores a broad range of rail industry principles and theory and has been designed so they can be studied around your working day and home life.

Student Testimonials

Tutorials at the beginning of every module were very helpful as we got to meet the Tutors and other students. Tutors were very supportive and so were the IRO staff at the tutorials.

Sandra Bregger

I particularly liked the flexibility. Being able to study around my work and life, not the other way round.

Richard Clevett

The IRO academic programme enables you to see all sides of the industry, not just the area in which you work.
