One of Scotland's leading 20th-Century industrialists, Lord Macfarlane of Bearsden, has died at the age of 95.

He enjoyed a long, varied and successful career with a number of top companies, such as The Macfarlane Group, Guinness and Diageo. A member of the House of Lords for more than 20 years, his contributions to business and society were recognised through his knighthood in 1983.

Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Pamela Gillies CBE FRSE said: “The University is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Lord Norman MacFarlane of Bearsden.

"A devoted Glaswegian, who made a significant contribution to his beloved city in the fields of business, commerce, the arts and charity.

"In 1993, the University was honoured when 'Norrie', as he was affectionately known, accepted an honorary degree in recognition of his outstanding achievements, and he went on to become a great friend of Glasgow Caledonian University and supporter of our students. Our condolences and thoughts are with his devoted wife Greta and the family at this difficult time."
