Academic Trade Union Court Member

Nick is a Senior Lecturer in Law at Glasgow Caledonian University. Nick has worked at the University for 24 years, receiving his Phd in Public Law from the University of Glasgow in 1998. He is the first academic trade union nominated member of Court at GCU. This is a position created by the Higher Education Governance (Scotland) Act 2016.

Nick’s teaching mainly focuses on Public Law, Human Rights and Civil Liberties. A recurrent theme that Nick has interest in is using legal structures to hold public authorities to account. He also works closely with first year LLB students introducing them to the study of Scots law and the legal system.

Nick also regularly appears on radio and TV as a legal commentator on live legal issues in Scottish society. During the Boris Johnson prorogation constitutional crisis of 2019 Nick appeared on media outlets across the UK and internationally with his thoughts on the situation. He has also given analysis on the recent pandemic and the expansion of police powers in Scotland.

Along with being regularly quoted Nick has also written columns for the print and online media including the Herald, the Times, the Scotsman and the Conversation. He has also been regularly published on legal research skills for students at all levels. Nick was recently appointed as the editor for the Housing law section of the annotated version of Scottish Social Work legislation.

Nick has been an active trade union representative since he began working at the University. As a member of the EIS/University Lecturers’ Association Nick has held a number of positions at both a local and national level including Vice President and President. This involved Nick being part of UK wide negotiations over pay in the Higher Education sector.

Nick has represented members locally in a number of different fora. He has also help negotiate a number of University policies with the University Executive. This has included the Framework Agreement in 2005 which implemented a single pay spine in the institution that is still in use.

Nick also is a member of the Combined Union Committee representing all unions at GCU which along with his local EIS branch nominated him for the Court position.

In other responsibilities outwith the University Nick is a board member of the Glasgow based human rights film festival Document.
