Working Well Week at GCU

Dietetics students contribute to Working Well Week at GCU, planning and delivering health promotion activities around healthy eating for staff and students.

What’s involved?
For the last few years, a number of dietetics students have volunteered to contribute to Working Well Week at GCU. The students set up a working team to plan and deliver health promotion activities around healthy eating. This year they delivered two early morning healthy eating sessions for facilities staff. This involved delivering a presentation and tasting session of healthy breakfast ideas. They also designed and staffed two stalls focussing on alcohol consumption and preventing type 2 diabetes.
How will participating in this activity/opportunity allow students to make a positive difference to the communities that we serve?
The early morning delivery of healthy eating sessions for facilities staff focussed on a population who are not usually targeted (or reached) by the activities offered later in the day at Working Well Week. The sessions evaluated very well with the target audience.
What are the benefits of taking part in this activity/opportunity for participating students?
Participating students gain practical experience in delivering health promotion activities. They have the opportunity to get to know students in other years and programmes, which provides useful networking experience. They gain experience in project management and delivery, confidence in delivering presentations and more in-depth knowledge of the topic of the session. Participating students have all reported the benefit of volunteering for these activities.

Which students can participate in this activity?
Students on nutrition and dietetics programmes (all years UG/MSc). Staff within Life Sciences put out a call for volunteers and co-ordinate participating students to ensure successful delivery of the Working Well Week events.
