Our friends give back

Georgia Barr

Continued support from retailTRUST and Hammerson meant nearly 30 fashion, retail and marketing students received bursaries to help ease financial pressures during their studies.

Georgia Barr, who graduated this year with a first-class distinction, is just one of many former scholars who, thanks to the financial and motivational backing from retailTRUST and Hammerson, has been able to pursue her dream of studying fashion while establishing her own sustainable fashion company.

Her business, Offcut Clothing, creates garments made from waste fabrics that would otherwise be destined for landfill. Georgia has been kept busy during the pandemic, making and selling face coverings. Collaborating with another fashion brand, they have been donating a mask for every one bought, to the charity Community Fridge in Dundee.

Without my scholarship, I wouldn’t have been able to study in London, progress my business ideas or have access to the most up to date information about how the pandemic is affecting the fashion industry.

GCU alumni and honorary graduates took part in a #WeAreGCU social media campaign during the first lockdown of the pandemic to share messages of support to the GCU community, as well as sharing recommendations of books, films and TV shows. Scottish actors Martin Compston, Blythe Duff and Gavin Mitchell got behind the campaign, as did WWE champion Drew McIntyre and musician Midge Ure.
