Mal Young

Executive producer Mal Young received a Doctor of Letters in recognition of his contribution to TV and support of GCU’s MA TV Fiction Writing students.

Mal began his career running Brookside, where he conceived the iconic first lesbian kiss on British TV. As the BBC’s Controller of Drama Series, he was responsible for more than 42 series including the return of Dr Who and, in the US, he is Showrunner on the number one rated daytime drama, The Young and the Restless. Mal has been awarded honours including Baftas, Royal Television Society awards, and Emmys, as well as ITV’s Special Achievement Award.

When I was offered the opportunity to mentor, support and encourage new writers on GCU’s MA TV Fiction Writing course, I jumped at the chance. You should always pass it on to the next generation.
