Find off-campus housing

If you prefer independent living and would like to find off-campus accommodation close to the university, Glasgow offers a wide selection of private student housing – everything from rooms in flats to entire houses.

Types of accommodation

What type of housing you choose depends on a few factors, including your preference for share with friends or living on your own, and whether or not you have a family to house?

  • Shared houses or flats
This is usually the first option for the vast majority of students. You rent a room in a house or flat and share the lounge, bathroom, toilet and kitchen with housemates. If you’re an international student, staying in a house can be a great way for you to experience Glasgow life and improve your language skills.

  • Self-contained flats
This is the ideal accommodation for small families, couples or people who like their own space. The flat you should have its own bathroom and kitchen, and a private front door. Amenities should not be shared.

  • Lodging
This involves living in a house, usually with the owner. It is not regulated, but expect house rules and check cooking arrangements. Meals may not be provided.

How much does it cost?

Rent varies depending on the area and type of accommodation. You can expect to pay anything from £250 a month and you should budget for bills, including internet, lighting, energy and other household costs, on top of this.

When to look

The rental market in Glasgow is extremely busy during the summer with other students joining the various colleges and universities throughout the city, so we advise that you start flat hunting as soon as possible. Short term accommodation is usually available at Caledonian Court during the summer, until 25th August..

Where to look

You are welcome to drop into the Accommodation Office at Caledonian Court for advice and information about the PAD (Private Accommodation Database) which helps students find accommodation in Glasgow. The Students’ Association is also a useful contact.
