Summary of Content

The module will also examine the rationale and processes underpinning assessment and mitigation of risk and examine the rationale and processes underpinning railway standards. It will also cover the audit processes which support the management of safety and cover the issues involved in safety and security in the workplace for passengers and staff. It will introduce the students to the role of contract and contractor management.

Syllabus

During the module the student will cover the following syllabus: -425 - Organisational responsibility, leadership and communication. - The role of key national agencies - Assessing and managing risk. - Safety critical and non-safety critical staff and the concept of staff competence. - Operation of safety audit systems and the management of safety. -425 - Managing Contractors

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:1. Critically analyse the key safety related areas of employment law as it affects the railway industry.2. Describe the processes required in order to manage operations effectively, in accordance with the relevant legislation.3. Describe and analyse the importance of organisational responsibility, leadership and communication.4. Critically analyse the roles of national agencies in relation to health and safety.5. Outline and analyse key operational issues in relation to risk assessment and health and safety in the workplace for both staff and passengers.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

It is intended that this module is delivered through GCULearn, GCU's on-line learning environment. Students will be expected to participate in a range of e-learning activities including individual and group work, and where appropriate self- and peer assessment. Formative assessment will be used to encourage learning and interpersonal skills, and the summative assessments will provide evidence of the development achieved throughout the module. A tutorial event at the start of the module will bring students together from the programme. This also provides the opportunity to meet their tutors. Further support will be offered via GCULearn, for example on line discussion and announcements, by e-mail and telephone. Formative assessment will be used not only to encourage knowledge of the subject, but also to help develop transferable skills. Summative assessments will provide evidence of the learning achieved throughout the module. Summative assessments are compulsory. A mark of 35% must be achieved for each summative assessment and an overall mark of 40% must be achieved in the module.
