Pre-Requisite Knowledge

Registered nurse currently working within a designated ophthalmic unit / or with a caseload of patients who have ophthalmic conditions with one year ophthalmic experience prior to course commencement.

Summary of Content

This module aims to develop and equip nurses with the knowledge, skills and expertise to care for ophthalmic patients in a variety of settings. The focus of the module is the development of ophthalmic clinical skills with underpinning knowledge to enable specialist practice, utilising critical analysis and application of the evidence base. The blended approach to this educational module will enable a flexible and interactive opportunity for the learner to consolidate and enhance their core competencies, develop specialist skills within the ophthalmic setting and support ophthalmic and career development. This learning programme will achieve credit ratings in-line with: Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) Level 9 RCN Competencies - Ophthalmic Nursing Career and Competency Framework Level 2 NES Post Registration Career Development Level 5/6 This learning programme will support ongoing personal and professional development requirements such as: NMC Revalidation Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF)

Syllabus

-360 Anatomy; Physiology; Optics; Ophthalmic bacteriology and pharmacology. Medical and Nursing management of surgical procedures and their complications. Disorders of the cornea, uveal tract. retina, optic nerve orbit and systemic disorders which affect the eye. Clinical skills relevant to ophthalmic nursing Psychological, social and health promotion issues related to ophthalmic patients Care planning and pathways Assessment processes Treatment regimes Evaluation of care Audit. Record keeping; professional and legal issues

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:1. Utilising an evidence-based approach, manage the holistic assessment of the ophthalmic patient, providing a rationale for further investigations in relation to their relevant medical history. 2. Critically appraise current literature to enable formulation, implementation and application of a problem-solving approach to a plan of care.3. Critically evaluate the effectiveness of prescribed therapeutic interventions to the proposed plan of care.4. Implement a holistic approach from pre-admission to discharge or rehabilitation applying knowledge of current evidence.5. Utilise specialist knowledge and critically reflect on the best current evidence for the promotion of ocular health and practice development.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module is delivered using a blended approach. A combination of lectures, facilitated group work, skills lab, online tutorials, interactive discussions, on-line learning and clinical supervision, will be used to facilitate directed and self-directed study. The student will obtain the equivalent of 72 hours of face to face contact time with the module team, excluding individual academic support and online facilitation. The fundamental aim of the teaching and learning strategies, irrespective of delivery mode is to support the development of autonomous, independent critical thinking and decision making within the parameters of the students' professional competence, role and employer's agreed vicarious liability (or equivalent). Clinical learning will be undertaken largely in the clinical areas with input for specialist skills from GCU vision services lab. A learning log will be used to evidence achievement of core competencies and a personal learning contract to choose the most appropriate optional clinical competencies in conjunction with their employer.
