Summary of Content

An introduction to measurement practice and conventions based on The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors New Rules of Measurement 2 - Detailed measurement for building work 1st Edition April 2012, including: (a) The history of quantity surveying and the need for measurement; the NRM suite. (b) Measurement conventions and practice including mean girth / centre line calculation; (c) Contract documentation including the use and format of Bills of Quantities and Work Packages in current use; (d) Elementary measurement examples including; internal finishes, windows and doors, flat and pitched roofs and coverings and simple masonry examples.

Syllabus

Consideration of the following topics some of which may have been introduced in other modules: - The history and context of the quantity surveying profession; - The use and need for measurement; - Introduction to the use of measurement codes of practice with particular reference to The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors New Rules of Measurement 2 - Detailed measurement for building work 1st Edition; - Measurement Conventions / an introduction to software packages - The purpose and application of Preliminaries in Bills of Quantities and Work Packages; Measurement of building works (based on NRM2) including: - Internal finishes; - Windows and doors; - Flat and pitched roof construction including roof coverings, and rainwater disposal; - Simple masonry - Substructures and drainage - Site works / soft landscaping / fencing

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:(a) demonstrate a knowledge of measurement conventions and be able to assess and interpret both written and drawn information, (A1, D3);(b) show an awareness of design principles, and be able to apply those to their knowledge of construction technology, (A1);(c) apply knowledge of construction technology in assessing the level of detail required for the description of works for tendering and procurement purposes, (A1).(d) be conversant with and be able to apply the principles of measurement and good practice, (A2, C1);(e) interpret and apply formalised codes of measurement practice in the production of bills of quantities and work packages, (A2, C2);(f) have developed intellectual skills relating to the module and will be able to demonstrate logical and effective problem solving abilities, exercising sound judgement (B3, C2, C6, D1-2);(g) apply technical knowledge in the assimilation, and interpretation of differing formats of information, whilst being aware of deficiencies in the amount and content of information provided by others, (B4, C3);(h) demonstrate an ability to work independently, and to organise and apply effective time management in the solving of problems related to the discipline, (D6-7);(i) demonstrate, through the use of workshops and given tasks, an ability to work as an integral member of a team, and develop and awareness of the necessity to do so (D12);(j) show, through assessed work, that they have acquired effective IT and communication skills, (written, oral and listening), necessary for the assimilation and solving of problems at this level (D13-D14).

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The essential purpose of this module is to provide the student with the time and environment to develop an understanding of the context and principles of measurement practice and conventions. The strategy further aims to help the student achieve competence in relating construction situations to a contractor's resourcing of a given project as detailed in Part 2 of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors New Rules of Measurement 2 - Detailed measurement for building work 1st Edition. This is achieved this by: (1) Lectures to teach concepts and principles - these are augmented by practical demonstrations to provide models on which students can build; (2) Workshops to enable students to practise measurement and documentation principles under supervision, utilising drawn information, published guidelines and worked examples; (3) Computer laboratory with computerised taking-off and bill production techniques - these are to augment practical demonstrations and workshops. (4) Provision of computer - generated worked examples and presentations ( some with voice - over provision) to allow individual student - centred supplementary study . Learning and teaching strategies will be developed and implemented, appropriate to students' needs, to enable all students to participate fully in the module.
