Summary of Content

The aim of this module is to enable part-time students working in the heritage sector to maximise their learning in cultural heritage studies though the use of work experience. There are two possible options within the module, each following on from one of the 20 credit core modules on the programme. In the Heritage Policy option, students reflect on the knowledge and understanding of the policy context and processes they have gained in the workplace, and using the academic skills they have gained during the academic study of heritage policy development in the Masters programme to analyse one specific policy development they have encountered at work. Similarly, students following the Heritage Management option will combine insights from work experience with the skills and tools gained in the Heritage Management module through the analysis of a live managment issue.


The student will initially identify key features of the organisation in which the study will take place, and the relationship of the policy development or management issue to be studied to the overall work of the organisation and the student's role therein. The area of study will be identified and a preliminary learning agreement identified with the module leader. Following a review of progress, a final Module Learning Plan will be confirmed. The remainder of the module follows the plan agreed and involves the collation of a portfolio, including a reflective essay relating to the agreed area of study.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The module is student-centred, requiring the student to study a specifically located policy development or management issue independently. Learning resources will include two group seminars, direct contact with the module leader, contact through e-mail, telephone and library access. A profile of work undertaken by the student in their workplace will be drawn up with the module leader, and a Module Learning Plan agreed, which will include involvement and reflection on some aspect of policy or management in their own workplace.
