Summary of Content

This module aims to aid the student in the development and enhancement of key professional skills, including increasing intercultural competencies, language proficiency and research skills to enable leadership and management of urban environments. It does so through student participation in key induction activities that promotes experiential learning, learning an additional language such as Finnish and/or Spanish and the development of a research proposal that demonstrates deep understanding of urban environment climate change issues. Throughout the module which spans 3 trimesters, students will also reflect on their own professional development, focusing on key intercultural competencies and the leadership skills that have been developed and enhanced.

Syllabus

The syllabus will cover the following areas: -360b7 The global need for a more holistic approach to managing climate change in urban areas b7 Sustainability Intelligence b7 Competency in the Spanish* language b7 Basic competency in Finnish b7 Research methods and how to write a research proposal b7 Intercultural and professional awareness of different professionals and cultures b7 Developing leadership skills *(Italian, German or French if native language is Spanish or proficiency already proven)

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:1. Appreciate the need for a cross disciplinary approach to managing climate change in urban areas.2. Develop proficiency in 'sustainable intelligence'.3. Develop proficiency in a language other than their native tongue (Spanish unless native, then German, French or Italian).4. Demonstrate basic competency in Finnish.5. Develop enhanced research skills and academic writing.6. Show awareness and understanding of the key intercultural skills that promote leadership in the management of sustainable urban environments.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module brings together students from both different professional and as well as cultural backgrounds. To aid a coherent and successful cohort the basis for the teaching during induction is centred on experiential learning that will promote understanding and awareness of each other's professional background. A key aspect of the course is also the acknowledgment that urban climate issues are part of the wider agenda for sustainability and global in nature; thus students need to develop intercultural and language competencies that allow for international employment. The module therefore incorporates language and cultural development in English, Finnish and Spanish. Workshops on research methods will also be structured throughout the trimesters.
