Summary of Content

The purpose of the module is to introduce students to research approaches to critical inquiry in their field of study and management their research project in timely fashion. The module provides requisite knowledge of research design across key areas and adopts a critical perspective in comparing and contrasting alternative research paradigms, adopting a reflexive approach to the underlying epistemological and ontological research questions so the students can comprehend and apply appropriate methodologies and methods. Further, the module introduces students to change management, common issues and how to plan for positive impact.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:-1. Critically evaluate various research approaches, methods, techniques and associated ethical considerations for their chosen topic for further study or consultancy/ management intervention. CW12. Design creative and practicable strategies for change that reflect contextual and ethical sensitivity, critical analysis and synthesis. CW13. Apply research and consultancy methods, knowledge and ability with originality in situations of a professional nature where there is a requirement for initiative in a complex or unpredictable context. CW14. Demonstrate the ability to anticipate and manage change associated with project outcomes for positive impact. CW1

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Discussion topics, lectures and online materials are designed for students to develop the necessary research techniques to conduct high quality independent research evident in the completion of a defined Masters level, research topic or business investigation project. Students will identify a small scale project based on a contemporary issue relevant to their current context and/or chosen pathway specialisation. Guided by tutor-input and support, students will build a report as they progress through the syllabus towards data collection and analysis. This hands-on experience of the research process will provide students with the ability to reflect on practical implications of conducting an enquiry to generate evidence supporting a project in preparation for bigger projects. With the newly generated evidence, students will have a real-world case study to apply change management considerations and plan for positive impact. This module allows students to prepare for the research by adopting a disciplined, logical and systematic approach to investigating a research or consultancy problem. The learning and teaching approach is driven by a focus on developing critical thinking skills and independent learning. It is informed by the research work of the research active module team to provide contemporary examples of comparative and good practice in research. GCU Learn based digital engagement will be extensively used to encourage communication between the students as they embark on their research journey and learn from each other's experiences.
