Summary of Content

The aim of this module is to enable students to maximise their learning of social science, particularly social policy, from work experience. It also aims to enhance independent learning ability required for CPD. This is achieved by encouraging students to use the skills they have gained during their MRes studies to analyse one specific issue relating to policy, practice or theory in a specific professional setting. The method used to structure the learning is a negotiated learning contract and support is provided via group and individual seminars.


Weeks 1-3 :Students will identify the main features of the organisation in which the study will take place, and the relationship of the policy issue to be studied to the overall work of the organisation and the student's own role therein The policy and skills areas the student wishes to study in their place of work will be identified and a preliminary learning agreement developed in negotiation with the module leader. Week 4: The student's learning progress to date is discussed with the module leader and the final investigation/ reflective study plan agreed.Weeks 5-15: The remaining period follows the plan agreed and the collation of a portfolio of evidence including a reflective essay relating to the policy issue and reflective learning identified

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students will be able to: Design and critically appraise a work based learning programme at postgraduate level Demonstrate an explicit responsibility for learning Integrate theory and practice through a critical analysis of a specified social or policy issue Practise a wide range of advanced and specialised skills in a professional setting.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The module is student centred and requires study of a specifically located policy change independently. Learning resources will include two group seminars, direct contact with the module leader, contact through e-mail and telephone and library access. A profile of the work undertaken by the student in their workplace will be drawn up with the module leader, and a learning plan agreed which will include involvement and reflection on some aspect of policy development in the student's place of work over a fifteen week period.
