Summary of Content

This module operates a 50% overall pass rate. The module develops insight into the strategic decision-making processes necessary for organisations to establish and meet organisational goals. It also examines the types of strategies and how they may be successfully utilised. Contemporary analytical techniques are reviewed and evaluated. Factors which influence Corporate Strategy are considered and contextualised in relation to the construction and property industry and constituent enterprises.

Syllabus

This module will investigate the role of strategic management and its influence on global and neighbourhood strategies of CnP enterprises. Strategic management and associated processes will be considered in light of internal and external influences and issues. Current best practice will be reviewed and contextualised with reference to the Construction and Property industry. Particular issues related to applicable analytical techniques will be reviewed and evaluated. The impact of various pieces of legislation directly related to the CnP enterprise, and other legislation, will be evaluated and the influence/s upon strategy/implementation discussed. The impact and fit of other management areas such innovation, business initiatives such as TQM and, financial management will be integrated within the overall strategic management model.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:1 Compare focal points from a range of CnP enterprises.2 Critically evaluate the internal and external influences acting upon a diverse industry like construction. 3 Critically evaluate strategic decisions taken by CnP enterprises within various sectors of the construction industry.4 Appraise the impact of culture upon CnP enterprise strategic management. Teaching / Learning Strategy

Seminars will be supplemented by case reviews and live project studies. The approach to learning used within this module will mirror that of the entire programme. A number of tasks will be used to structure the learning process and to provide a context for the analysis of the substantive content. Students will be directed to paper based readings, and encouraged to access appropriate web-based materials. They will be encouraged to interact with each other through First Class based discussion groups. Associated with this they will produce formative and summative outputs for each task. They will receive regular feedback from their tutors. Staff within the school have considerable experience in supporting students who have/experience difficulties, and work closely with the University Student Support Services to ensure that appropriate support is provided to suit each student's individual needs. A number of strategies have been adapted as required to allow such students to fully participate in their programme of study, including the provision of material in advance, use of scribes, signers, specialist software the like.
