Summary of Content

The project acts as a vehicle for extending the knowledge and understanding of the student and the technical community in some specialist area. It serves, through its length, complexity and rigour, as a suitable vehicle for extending, in the student, a range of personal, interpersonal and communication skills. In addition, it serves to develop and extend a range of high-level 'thinking' skills, including analysing and synthesising skills and affords the opportunity for the student to demonstrate initiative and creativity in a major piece of technological work. The project will require students to draw on the skills learned in the taught modules and to use investigative skill to identify suitable technologies in order to build a working application and critically appraise the functionality of the application.

Syllabus

Not Applicable. However, project must be a suitable vehicle for satisfying all learning outcomes detailed above. Dissertation, by its nature, is an individual piece of research work. The nature of the activities which make up a dissertation will involve some of the following: 1. Selection of topic 2. Formulating research plan 3. Collecting information: Literature review and data collection 4. Evaluating data 5. Interpreting results and presentation of findings The dissertation will be supervised by a tutor who will provide guidance, and ensures parity of standard and of assessment.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Learning outcomes will be achieved through a combination of directed learning, mentoring and independent learning. The student will be allocated a supervisor to provide advice and guidance with regards to administrative, procedural and approach issues. The student will be issued with a Project Handbook and directed reading from the allocated supervisor. Academic staff will allocate projects based on research, development and consultancy expertise which can be carried out in the University.
