Summary of Content

This module follows one of two paths: 1. The development of a new product/service from the feasibility study to pre-production. 2. The development or modification of an existing productservice. Using a multi-disciplinary team based product as a vehicle, the module may optionally involve engineering students from universities in other countries to introduce a multinational dimension, depending on the nature of the project. The aim of this module is: To develop and consolidate skills in team-working, engineering leadership, business and social awareness To develop skills in planning, decision making, data collection and engineering analysis by selecting a project and progressing it to a satisfactory conclusion To develop an appreciation of risk, environmental, health and safety, ethical and regulatory issues To present these conclusions orally, visually and in a written document.

Syllabus

It should be understood that this module is written with engineering students in mind. Product/Service Design: The team is expected to draw on skills learned during the previous taught B.Eng Hons and appropriate elements of the M.Eng programme. Students will be asked to design and build a specific product, (or part thereof) a range of products or a potential product. The theme will be the creation of commercially viable designs and the solution is expected to be fully justified from a technical viewpoint. Prototypes and/or evaluation models are expected to be produced and the functional design should be completed to at least the point at which a detailed design scheme can be submitted. Project Management: Deconstruction, work breakdown structure, activity charts, Gantt, PERT. Project costing and financing, risk assessment and management, understanding and use of critical path. Feasibility analysis and plan development - evaluation of costs of space, manpower, plant and equipment, services, funding, legal and fiscal aspects. Commercial Exploitation: Establish a plan for the commercial exploitation of the product: resource, finance, market, strategic, legal, economic issues that influence such a plan. Examples of related past projects: - Methodology for assessment of boiler headers under cyclic loading - Analysis and redesign of a railway pantograph system

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, the student should be able to:- Critically analyse and evaluate manufacturing, marketing, and sales constraints within product design.- Develop, implement and document an effective project plan including a stated aim and an agreed set of deliverables.- Demonstrate and defend how the plan changed over time.- Produce a fully justified design for a viable product/service by performing a critical engineering analysis of the subject.- Produce a business plan for the exploitation of the product consistent with the commercial constraints.- Produce a working prototype, or appropriate part thereof, to prove the design concept.- Analyse the team behaviour over the duration of the project and support the argument by reference to records of meetings and other transactions.- Demonstrate the ability to collect, collate and use intelligently information from relevant sources.- Demonstrate an appreciation of risk, environmental, health, ethical, safety and regulatory issues.- Define aspects of the engineering and business case for the product/service at an individual interview.The module is intended to be run in one of two ways:1. Collaborating teams of multidisciplinary engineering students- where possible, or2. Single status teams.Against each item of the learning outcomes and the syllabus is an indicator of the credit rating of the activity. Students are asked to study for a total of 45 SCOTCAT (22.5 ECTS) credit points. The distribution of credits for different disciplines is set out in the student handbook.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module may be studied by engineering students who have successfully completed the appropriate B.Eng (Hons) degree level 4 modules requirements in line with the filters in the assessment regulations. Team-working with keynote lectures and seminars, the use of relevant specialists. Use of electronic communication techniques. Team meetings with mentors (including industrialists where possible) whose object is to steer the teams toward a solution and to offer guidance as needed, though the project should be student led. Students will draw heavily on learning from other modules, however, there will be many subjects of which they are inadequately aware. In these circumstances, candidates will be expected to find out the information themselves. Staff may offer guidance and direction as necessary, however the leadership emphasis is on the activities of the candidates with the members of Academic staff in the role of client as supervising Chartered Engineer. The pedagogical objective is to position theoretical learning within practical situations to correlate theory with practice; in consequence of which each project shall ideally be based on a real need and completed within an existing workplace. Provision will be made to place it within a virtual enterprise should it prove suitable for educational or commercial reasons.
