Summary of Content

The module aims to provide the student with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of modern industrial communications systems. The operation of a wide range of state-of-the-art advanced communications systems will be studied, e.g. satellite systems, digital cellular mobile networks and wireless sensor networks. On completion of the module, students will be able to: deal systematically and creatively with the complexity of current advanced industrial communications systems and make sound technical and commercial judgments; demonstrate originality and self-direction in problem solving related to advanced industrial communications system implementation and evaluation; further develop their knowledge and understanding to embrace new theories, techniques and issues related to advanced industrial communications systems as they emerge .


Spread spectrum techniques such as direct sequence and frequency hopping including case studies. Important relevant current and emerging technologies and systems. Communications satellite technology including orbits, mobile satellite systems (MSS), payload technologies, channel characteristics and radio link budgets. Development of an awareness of issues at the forefront of modern advanced industrial communication systems by critical appreciation of current research, relating current research to relevant practical applications (such as SCADA systems, remote sensor systems and advanced SDR technology) and knowledge of developments in national and international radio regulatory requirements.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to:Demonstrate a systematic understanding of and a critical awareness of the problems associated with, industrial communications systems. Demonstrate comprehensive understanding and ability to deal with a range of practical evaluation techniques, such as quality of service (QoS) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) measurements. Demonstrate critical evaluation of current research in industrial communications systems and demonstration of the ability to interpret research in terms of potential practical usefulness.

The module will be taught by means of lectures, seminars, tutorials, directed studies, research presentations, laboratory work and case studies.
