Summary of Content

This module is part of the interprofessional (IPE) suite of modules delivered to pre-qualifying MSc students in Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Social Work. A major thread of our professional lives is that of working within and across organisations and in an increasingly interprofessional context. This is true for all professional disciplines whether in local authority, health, or the third sector. Understanding the nature of public sector organisations and their work is an essential component of effective interprofessional practice alongside that of continuous professional development. In the context of an increasingly complex global public policy agenda, it is even more relevant to understand the systems, policies, politics and power relationships that underpin modern organisational life as well as the multiple professional identities and responsibilities of self and others. From a policy and practice perspective, this is reflected in the drive towards personalisation of services and the move towards integration of health and social care. These processes will impact significantly on organisations delivering health and social care and transform working practices for the professional groups involved. The purpose of this module is, from an interprofessional perspective, to develop a critical understanding of organisations, the contested landscape of interprofessional working and how this impacts on individual and collective practice.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:1.Demonstrate a critical understanding of the principal concepts and theories of organisational behaviour 2.Demonstrate a critical understanding of the policy context and drivers for change in interprofessional practice within and across organisations3.Demonstrate a critical awareness of multiple professional identities and professional responsibilities of self and others in an interprofessional context4.Demonstrate a critical understanding of theories relation to change management and the leadership of change within an interprofessional context5.Demonstrate a critical understanding of how interprofessional practice within organisations impacts on the quality of practice in health and social care6.Demonstrate a critical awareness of personal and professional development within an interprofessional context

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The teaching and learning strategy employed in this module is based upon theories of adult learning which recognize the increasing responsibility and autonomy that is associated with study at Masters level. The range of approaches used in the module include interprofessional small group learning, lectures and on-line activities on key themes, inputs from external contributors, seminars, on-line activities, student presentations, guided reading and individual learning. Principles of constructive alignment underpin the relationship between the teaching activities and assessed work. To accommodate the different disciplines studying the module, teaching sessions will occur through combined weekly sessions, thereby requiring that students take responsibility for study preparation prior to the weekly sessions.
