Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:1. Articulate the philosophical bases of quantitative and qualitative research;2. Critically analyse the characteristics of different methodological approaches and methods of research;3. Evaluate the applicability of different research methods within their own clinical area;4. Critically appraise available literature in order to justify a research question relating to the student's own clinical practice;5. Formulate a feasible small scale study or systematic literature review relating to the students own clinical practice, which utilises a research methodology appropriate for the question.6. Justify the selection of appropriate data analysis methods in order to fulfil the student's research aims.7. Demonstrate competent IT, bibliographic skills and utilisation of web resources.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This is a school-wide module allowing students from different disciplines and programmes to learn together. The module is flexible in its delivery allowing distance learning students, part-time students and full time students to work together in online discussions, formative assessments and other online interaction. Face-to-face contact key lectures are delivered to full-time students on alternative weeks or part-time students during the Master's attendance weeks in semester 1 and 2; these key lectures are recorded and distance learning students follow these online as recorded podcasts and/or narrated MS Powerpoint presentations. All students also engage in self-directed online learning with pre-reading or further reading.
