Summary of Content

-107 This theory/practice module is designed to ensure clinical competency in obstetric ultrasound by delivering the theory underpinning obstetric ultrasound imaging whilst students engage in practice concurrently. It is a requirement from our programme accreditors (CASE) that students demonstrate a minimum of 14 hours practical placement per week over three teaching trimesters. As CASE stipulates the placement hours this requirement impacts on total number of hours associated with this module. The module learning enables the student to develop: -360b7 Knowledge and understanding of normal and abnormal human genetics -360b7 Knowledge and understanding of the aetiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of abnormalities of the fetus, placenta and umbilical cord as relevant to ultrasound. b7 Knowledge and understanding of the normal and abnormal female pelvis and pregnant and non-pregnant reproductive tract b7 Critical awareness in synthesizing information and evaluative skills for the competent and safe performance of obstetric ultrasound examinations -360b7 Comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable for obstetric ultrasound investigations The philosophies are taught using a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, simulation, directed and self-directed study and clinical application including work based learning

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module, the student should be able to:1. interpret, critically analyse and reflect upon all available information in order to communicate findings, in accordance with local policies and practices,2. critically evaluate the ultrasound findings and where necessary arrange, advise or undertake further investigations appropriate to local policies and practices,3. critically appraise, synthesise and utilise all information from various sources to determine the most appropriate obstetric ultrasound examination,4. critically appraise the ethical principles associated with medical ultrasound examinations in order to inform practice,5. demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the principles of problem solving within the ultrasound profession in order to resolve issues in practice,6. communicate clearly and effectively with clients, patients, carers and other healthcare professionals appropriately and in the context of the examinations performed,7. apply and synthesise scientific, ergonomic and safety principles in order to identify, select and manipulate equipment,8. competently carry out obstetric ultrasound examinations according to the evidence base,9. actively demonstrate proficiency in reporting ultrasound examinations to reflect the clinical question raised,10. contribute to case management by discussion and debate at all levels in patient diagnosis and prognosis,11. critically reflect on personal and professional practice in order to challenge, develop, maintain and enhance local and national professional standards in obstetric ultrasound,12. demonstrate continuing personal and professional development during the learning period to inform practice.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Learning strategies will range from key lectures which will stimulate student thinking and opinion to student-led group seminars, simulated learning and individual mentorship that encourage autonomous practice. Clinical based learning, an intrinsic part of the module, will take place at the students' placements where individual tutorials led by the clinical mentors/teams, based on the workload referrals, will encourage problem solving and reflective practice. Where it is identified in the placement unit, through learning objectives and feedback, that the student's contact with more complex pathologies is limited, clinical experience in these areas will be supplemented normally by a placement in an alternative centre with a wider range of procedures and examinations. Emphasis is placed on the student achieving autonomy, competent to carry out Obstetric ultrasound examinations. Enabling strategies in the clinical placement will reflect this approach. The virtual e-learning environment - GCU Learn- offers a forum for exchange of information and ideas among participants with the intention of broadening their learning experience and encouraging students to become autonomous, reflective learners who assume responsibility for their own academic progress and evaluate information from a diverse range of sources. The Professional Portfolio assessment will be utilised as a learning tool throughout the module, encouraging the student to reflect on practice and provide a vehicle for continuing development. Any learning gaps in key skills identified during the module delivery and the assessment process will be addressed by individual tutorials.
