Summary of Content

This module introduces a variety of cardiac and respiratory conditions, and their physiotherapy assessment, planning, treatment and management. It also considers the potential impact of pyschosocial factors such as age, gender, culture and socio-economic status. Treatment management approaches include exercise, self-management, behaviour change physiotherapeutic techniques. It also includes critical appraisal of relevant current literature. The ability to document physiotherapy findings in an agreed format (POMR/SOAP) with consideration of professional statutory bodies and legal requirements will be developed. The viva examination is designed to simulate the clinical assessment, management and clinical reasoning necessary for professional practice. The written exam will consolidate knowledge and understanding of cardiacand respiratory conditions and pathophysiology.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the module students should be able to:-1. Critical synthesise anatomy and biomechanics of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in order to critically analyse and evaluate the impact course and prognosis of cardiac and respiratory pathologies and dysfunction on normal cardiac and respiratory function2. Identify, critically appraise and apply holistic management strategies to meet individual patients needs using evidence and some critical awareness for individuals with cardiovascular and/or respiratory problems.3. Work with a critical understanding of the principal theories of behaviour change and relate to setting of appropriate patient-centred goals4. Demonstrate the ability to document physiotherapy findings in an agreed format (SOAP) taking credence of professional and legal requirements.5. Critically appraise and utilise a broad range of research evidence to underpin clinical reasoning and decision making related to cardiac and respiratory dysfunction.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module will adopt a blended learning approach. Theoretical concepts will be explored using face-to-face teaching and learning strategies in tutorials, lectures, seminars and practical classes. These strategies will include; clinical reasoning panels, clinical simulation, problem-based learning, group discussion, peer-assisted learning, flipped classrooms, role modelling, visiting clinical specialists, service users and self-directed learning. GCU Learn virtual learning environment (and other online media) will be utilised to facilitate learning with strategies such as; reflective tasks and directed activities. Real-life scenarios will be used to enable students to apply and develop knowledge, skills and attributes in the varied contexts of physiotherapy practice. Constructivist theory will underpin the students' learning experience. CPD related activities will be used throughout and students will be actively encouraged to engage and add to their personal development portfolio.
