Summary of Content

This module will enable students to develop a critical understanding of contemporary public health challenges: the range of factors that in?uence health and well-being, and the impact of national and global public health policies and strategies. This module will allow physiotherapy students to expand their role as agents for health promotion. The module will extend students' understanding of health and well-being, and the challenges in health measurement. It will focus on health promotion as an integral part of professional practice for the general population and patient groups, with an emphasis on health literacy and empowerment. It will provide students with knowledge, understanding and skills, enabling them to practice within health promotion settings.


*The concept of health and pertinent issues in relation to age, gender, culture and socio-economic status. * The complex inter relationship of determinants influencing health. * The current trends in longevity and changing nature of health problems. * Issues associated with the measurement of health and wellbeing. * Theoretical underpinning of approaches to behaviour change. * Factors influencing health related behaviour and behaviour change. * The meaning and scope of public health and health promotion and their importance within contemporary physiotherapy practice. * Factors which need to be considered and addressed in project management when developing health promotion actvities, and when designing health-related educational material. * The national priority health topics and the strategies and policies being implemented to tackle them. * Logic modelling as a method of project development * The use of a range of strategies to influence health related behaviour change. * Basic principles of teaching and learning to underpin health promotion activities * Basic web design using free online software

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:1. Critically analyse the conceptualizations and determinants of health, including: age, gender, culture and socio-economic status. 2. Critically evaluate the methods of measuring outcome and impact of health promotion. 3. Identify and discuss current global and national trends, policies and practices in health. 4. Critically discuss the factors influencing individual and population health related behaviour and behaviour change. 5. Apply the principles involved in behaviour change to a real world context. 6. Design and deliver a health promotion activity; including scoping, planning, design, delivery, and evaluation. 7. Produce appropriate digital health-promotion materials for a specific population. 8. Apply basic principles of teaching and learning in health promotion design.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Learning will use an engagement-through partnership approach. This will occur through a combination of negotiated student and staff led seminars and tutorials, and directed and independent activities and study. Students will negotiate and collaborate with stakeholders in the community in the process of developing the group health promotion activity and website. GCULearn will be used as the VLE by staff and students.
