Summary of Content

This module considers the way in which national identity is constructed in the media in Scotland, and the economic, institutional and political frameworks within which identity is constructed. Within this, the area of the Press, TV, Cinema, Music and Fiction will be examined in the field both of English language and of Gaelic productions. GSBS will continue to use the advancement of GCU Learn as a blended learning tool through its teaching and learning as well as through engagement with students. GSBS will ensure that all modules are GCU Learn enabled and with the support of the Learning Technologists at the cutting edge of development of online materials. Academic staff and the Learning Technologists will continue to work together to develop and operate all modules on GCULearn to ensure student support and information sharing. Students are provided with formative and summative feedback via a variety of mechanisms. Feedback on coursework is provided within 3 working weeks of submission.

Syllabus

Brief historical overview of constitutional evolution of Scotland, the concept of national identity; varying definitions of Scottishness; the interaction of politics, economics, technology and culture; the complications of language - Gaelic within Scottish identity.. The Cultural Industries: the structure and economics of publishing, cinema and broadcasting; audience size and audience taste; cultural colonialism and economic colonialism; intervention in the market by government and government agencies; the development of cultural policy. Cinema: documentary and features traditions; mainstream and minority cinema consumption with reference to selected films; attempts to develop non-Hollywood discourses. The Press: regional and national newspapers; political stance and the question of identity; the magazine sector - problems of foreign competition and the marginalisation of indigenous production. Broadcasting: articulation of Scottishness in selected genres of television programmes, viz the one-off play, the soap opera and news; the tensions between the national and the regional, the problem of language; the development of distinctive courses. Scotland in music and literature. Fiction: exploration of national identity in selected novelists and/or short story writers; the development of distinctive modes of national representation. Gaelic in the Scottish Cinema and on TV

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:1. Understand the socio-economic and cultural contexts within which the Scottish media operates.2. Develop critical abilities to analyse a range of media texts in the light of that understanding.3. Develop critical abilities to understand the outlook of minority communities within a national setting, as reflected in the media.
