Summary of Content

The module aims to further develop in students a deeper and critical understanding of the established and evolving theories and principles of management accounting. The core areas of management accounting as developed in the pre- requisite modules will form the basis for this development whilst a number of specialist areas will be introduced. Links will be made to related subject areas such as business strategy. Information gathering and analysis are fundamental to the module with required reading within the current academic journals.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:1. Critically evaluate current developments in management accounting from a knowledge based that is informed by recent research and 2. practice rather than simply accepting existing theories and concepts.3. Independently research areas of difficulty, contention and controversy, judge the arguments and justify the conclusions.4. Develop an ability to work with theoretical and research based knowledge in the area of management accounting.5. Demonstrate the ability to engage effectively in a two way communication by making individual contributions to small group discussions

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Teaching / Learning Strategy Lectures will be used to introduce and develop subject areas. Seminars aim to provide a discursive forum for subject areas covered in the lectures. The seminars will be group led by students covering appropriate academic literature. GSBS will continue to use the advancement of GCU Learn as a blended learning tool through its teaching and learning as well as through engagement with students. GSBS will ensure that all modules are GCU Learn enabled and with the support of the Learning Technologists at the cutting edge of development of online materials. Academic staff and the Learning Technologists will continue to work together to develop and operate all modules on GCULearn to ensure student support and information sharing. Students are provided with formative and summative feedback via a variety of mechanisms. Feedback on coursework is provided within 3 working weeks of submission. Common Good attributes can be found in a number of areas within the module. Environmental management accounting aids students in recognising and actively seeking to address global social trends and challenges. Not-for-profit management accounting allows students to explore the area of societal problems and taking management action to build a more just and sustainable society. The seminars are constructed to allow for open and responsible debate respectful of other students helping students to respect their own and others' rights and needs and being able to understand, respect and engage with a diverse range of audiences and stakeholders.
