Summary of Content

The aim of the course is to make the students familiar with the concepts of Automation and understand the components /parts that facilitate the automation in assemblies and machines.


The teaching syllabus will cover the following areas: Concepts of automation - low cost automation - role of sensors and transducers ,and other input devices, output devices, control elements in automation -CNC machines - Pick and Place systems

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to:1. Demonstrate the different automation techniques in various equipment and assemblies (AM1, AM4).2. Demonstrate Industrial automation using Programmable Logic Controllers (AM1, AM4).3. Develop the control of sensors, transducers, input and output devices using software based automation techniques (AM1, AM4).4. Develop CNC Programs and demonstrate various machining operations using CNC machine (AM1, AM4). 5. Develop Robot programs to demonstrate pick and place operations (AM1, AM4).

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The main teaching method will be based on lectures with laboratory exercises used to relate theoretical concepts to practical experience. The students will be expected to perform directed reading exercises and self-learning exercises on automation concepts.
