Summary of Content

The aim of the course is to provide comprehensive knowledge of automation techniques which are useful for the modern industries and also to provide knowledge of robotics in the design, analysis and control.

Syllabus

The teaching syllabus will cover the following areas: Introduction to Automation: Concept and scope of automation, low cost automation- Introduction and benefits of Pneumatics and Hydraulic Automation - Introduction to electrical and electronic controls -Influence of transducers and sensors in Automation, Integration of mechanical systems with electrical, electronic and computer systems. Modern Industrial Automation: CNC machine- Influence of PLC in Automation- Machine vision-Co-ordinate Measuring Machine -Flexible Manufacturing System. Robotics: Definition and origin of robotics - different types of robotics - various generations' of robots - degrees of freedom - Asimov's laws of robotics - dynamic stabilization of robots. Manipulators, Actuators and Grippers: Construction of manipulators - manipulator dynamics and force control - electronic and pneumatic manipulator control circuits - end effectors - U various types of grippers -design considerations. Robot Application-Case Studies: Multiple robots - machine interface - robots in manufacturing and non- manufacturing applications - robot cell design - selection of robot.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to:1. Analyse various requirements of automation in industries (AM1)2. Design and develop the various automation techniques for industrial automation (AM1)3. Apply the techniques available for industry automation (AM1, AM5)4. List various applications of robots in modern industries (AM1)5. Describe the function of robotic components (AM5)6. Justify the selection of appropriate automation technique and associated robotic applications (AM5).

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The main teaching method will be based on lectures with laboratory exercises used to relate theoretical concepts to practical experience. The students will be expected to perform directed reading exercises and self-learning exercises on emerging technologies. Tutorials will be used to reinforce the module material and to discuss the issues raised by the directed reading.
