Summary of Content

This module is designed to enhance the structural engineering principles covered in levels 1 to 3 by considering the following topics: Design of prestressed concrete; Yield line method for design of reinforced concrete; Structural dynamics; Vector mechanics for structural analysis; Design of concrete, steel and timber structures subject to fire; Design requirements for multi-storey buildings and shear walls. The percentage of Work Based Learning for this module, as represented by the Independent Learning "Activity Type" , is 66%. Work Based Assessment is 50%.


Prestressed concrete; Yield line method; Structural dynamics; Analysis of structural elements using vector mechanics; Thermal effects of structural fire on structural materials; Design of multi-storey buildings; Design of shear walls to stabilise tall buildings.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the students should be able to:Knowledge, Understanding and Practical Application1. Critically evaluate and conduct design of prestressed concrete structures;2. Design reinforced concrete floor slabs using yield line method;3. Solve dynamic problems of simple structures; 4. Critically design steel, concrete and timber structures that are subject to fire conditions and consider the options available to the engineer to minimise collapse due to reduced structural capacity caused by fire;5. Critically analyse structural elements and frames using vector mechanics;6. Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module includes a variety of teaching and learning methods including lectures, seminars, and tutorials. Learning and teaching strategies will be developed and implemented, appropriate to students' needs, to enable all students to participate fully in the programme. Work Based Learning that will complement this module will be agreed with each employer and be reflected in the Individual Apprentice Learning Plan for the year.

Transferrable Skills

On completing this module the student should have developed skills in analysing complex structures by breaking down to simple elements and developed mathematical models, as well as with a good understanding of the effects of fire on structures.
