Summary of Content

The aim of this module is to review concrete making materials and apply the knowledge and understanding in the design of concrete mix proportions based on the current British standards specifications for various applications. To acquire knowledge about special concrete and hence to introduce to the topics contained. In this module, the rheological properties of concrete, concrete mix design methods, Ready mixed concrete, High Performance Concrete, High Strength Concrete, fibre reinforced concrete, self-compacting concrete. Supplementary cementitious materials will also be explained. The aim also include providing an insight into the importance of advanced concrete technology and their importance in the context of aggressive environments and hence to expose to the modern developments in concrete 74 | P a g e Module Descriptors BEng Construction Engineering Dec 2014 making for durable structures.


The teaching syllabus will cover the following areas: Introduction: Brief Review of concrete making materials, importance of workability, factors influencing workability, properties of concrete at plastic and hardened state. Rheological properties of concrete: Introduction to the representation of rheological behavior of concrete, factors affecting rheological properties, concrete mixture adjustments. Quality control of concrete: Introduction, factors causing variations in the quality of concrete, field control, statistical quality control, measure of variability, quality management in concrete construction. Concrete Mix Design: Principles of concrete mix design as per BS: Standards. Basic consideration in mix design, factors influencing the choice of mix proportions, concrete mix design, computer-aided concrete mix design, conversion of mix proportions from mass to volume basis, field adjustments, preparing a generalized format for concrete mix proportion. Concreting under extreme environmental conditions-High performance concrete-High Strength Concrete, Fibre reinforced concrete, Selfcompacting concrete, Ready mixed concrete, Special concretes.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to: 1. Develop knowledge in the field of concrete technology for designing concrete mixes [A2].2. Develop expertise and demonstrate concrete mix design principles for a variety of construction projects [A6]3. Develop independent judgment and demonstrate efficient professional judgment underpinned by technical ability [B5]4. Evaluate research material sources, critically appraise and evaluate results [ B6]5. Apply theoretical knowledge of materials learnt to practical field application problems related to concrete technology [C1,C2,C3]6. Understand and apply the knowledge in the context of the subject [D3]7. Appropriate IT skills knowledge in the design of concrete mixes [D8]

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The main teaching method will be based on class room lectures using teaching aids like overhead projector slides and power point presentations. The students will be expected to perform directed reading and self-learning exercises and enhance their knowledge. The students are exposed to laboratory work and site visits. Tutorials will be used to reinforce the module material and to discuss the issues raised by the directed reading.
