Summary of Content

The aim of this module is to develop an understanding of the use of fully integrated software in design and manufacture of products and the rapid prototyping techniques which can be used to reduce time to market of new products. The percentage of Work Based Learning for this module, as represented by the Independent Learning "Activity Type" and some of the Practicals "Activity Type", is 55%. The percentage of Work Based Assessment for this module is 25%, which is represented by the Minor Coursework.


Modelling Methodology: Idealisation, element selection, loading, boundary conditions, symmetry, load cases. Static Analysis: Small displacement linear elastic solution planar/axisymmetric structures. Analysis Validation: Convergence, nodal/element results, results processing. Solid Modelling; parts containing sweeps and blends, assemblies, drawings of parts and assemblies, exploded views, assembly datums, dimension clash, photorendering. Computer Aided NC programming; set up of manufacture model from solid model, specification of machine tool and cutting tools, identification of surfaces to be machined, creation of machining sequence, post processing. The aforementioned to cover both multi axis milling and turning. Evaluation of polymer components for moulding; use of software to create the mould model from component solid model, position of sprues and runners, optimisation of material flow in mould. Rapid prototyping; comparion of different rapid prototyping techniques, surface finish, component size, accuracy etc; cost of machines and prototype components. Application of rapid prototyping in the industrial environment.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to:Utilise a feature based solid modelling package to create assemblies and drawings from component parts.Use an FE Package to analyse a simple model.Generate NC codes to machine solid geometry features using an integrated feature based solid modelling and multi axis NC manufacturing programming) package.Use an integrated feature based solid modelling and manufacturing (mould flow simulation) package to assess the mouldability of components.Specify/apply rapid prototyping to an industrial environment to assist in reducing time to market of complex shaped components.Apply the knowledge gained to practical examples in the work place.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Practical use of an integrated modelling and manufacturing package is the learning strategy used for most of this module; there will be a number of lectures and seminars covering rapid prototyping. This will be taught with reference to the student work place environment and will be contextualised to allow the student to gain maximum benefit from the course. Work Based Education aims to maximise the direct and digitally mediated contact time with students by practicing teaching and learning strategies that use authentic work based scenarios and encourage action learning, enquiry based learning, problem based learning and peer learning. All these approaches aim to directly involve the students in the process of learning and to encourage sharing of learning between students. The module team will determine the level and accuracy of knowledge acquisition at key points in the delivery, inputting when necessary either directly or with the support of external experts who will add to the authenticity, the credibility and application of the education and learning to the workplace.
