Summary of Content

The module is designed to equip the student with modelling skills that will develop the ability to analyse and review complex networking systems and understand the theoretical underpinning of simulation and gain competency in the use of a simulation package. This module will focus on the transport of multimedia traffic over a variety of communication networks. It will concentrate on the relationships between different types of multimedia traffic, network infrastructures and network protocols in regard to achieving the required Quality-of-Service parameters for multimedia applications. Emphasis will be given to modern high speed communication networks designed to carry high volumes of heterogeneous traffic. LAN/MAN/WAN models with various protocols and different multimedia traffic will be developed and simulated over the semester to investigate the behaviour and limitations of such networks.

On completion of this module, the student should be able to: Critically analyse and review complex networking systems for consideration of potential improvement changes Demonstrate and understanding of the role of simulation and the types of applications to which the simulation approach can be appliedCritically analyse output from models and evaluate performance Discuss and evaluate standard models of communication in relation to multimedia and analyse the need for QoS and the methods to implement QoSDiscuss, compare and evaluate the factors which affect the Quality-of-Service of networked multimediaDevelop a simulation model of a small MAN/WAN communication network using a variety of protocols and various types of multimedia traffic, and analyse the results of such a simulation to determine network performance and network limitations

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Lectures will be used to introduce the theoretical aspects of the course. Lecture work will be supported by tutorials involving problem solving and worked examples. Practical sessions will be used to evaluate network performance and to use simulation models. Students will be expected to carry out a significant amount of directed study and self learning.
