Summary of Content

This module will synthesize earlier learning and clinical skills in conditions that are common in practice. In addition the module aims to consolidate understanding of conditions which present less commonly in practice such as Neuro-ophthalmology, oculoplastics, endocrinology, neurology, maxillo facial, genetics, cardiology, geriatrics and paediatrics. The module will introduce students to other related areas of eye care, such as low vision, management of specific learning difficulties, stroke, functional visual assessment, developmental disorders.


General medical and ophthalmological investigations, observation, case history, orthoptic investigation Myogenic Mechanical: Myasthenia gravis. CPED, Mitochondrial myopathies Using exemptions in legislation for the sale, supply and administration of medicines by Orthoptists Pupillary anomalies: Neuro-ophthalmology: Supra nuclear pathway's and palsies, internuclear and infra nuclear palsies : Centres for horizontal gaze, Vertical gaze centers, Different types of gaze palsies Loss of conjugate gaze. Internuclear ophthalmoplegia, one and a half syndrome, Skew deviations, Parinaud's orbital apex syndrome/ all other syndromes Professionals Bodies and professional practce ( BIOS, HPC, Other governing bodies, Health and Safety, ethics, standards and guidelines, CPD) Specific learning difficulties, low vision, stroke, glaucoma, functional vision -1

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:1. Recognise and diagnose common neuro-ophthalmic disorders, and recognize the role of the Orthoptics in non-complex and complex developmental and acquired conditions2. Understand the role of eye care in extended roles such as stroke care, specific learning difficulties, glaucoma, low vision3. Appreciate the role of eye care practice as part of multidisciplinary teams in complex conditions4. Collate and synthesize clinical information to contribute to the management of all types of ocular motility disorder5. Understand pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacology and therapeutics relevant to medicines use within their professional scope of practice and how these may be altered by certain characteristics6. Understand the differences between the sale, supply and administration of medicines using exemptions, other supply / administration mechanisms and prescribing mechanisms7. Understand the importance of shared decision-making with service users to encourage self-care and adherence with medicines advice8. Be able to make a decision about whether to sell, supply or administer medicines using exemptions, based on a relevant examination, 9. Be able to communicate information about medicines clearly with service users and others involved in their care10. Be able to evaluate each potential treatment option with respect to an individual service user, taking into account relevant factors, the service user's circumstances, co-morbidities and other medicines taken11. Be able to demonstrate safe use of medicines12. Understand antimicrobial resistance and the roles of infection prevention and control13.Develop their clinical reasoning skills towards competent practice

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module will consist of lectures, tutorials and seminar presentations. Literature reviews will be used to develop in depth understanding. Practical aspects of clinical evaluation in the investigation and management of binocular vision anomalies are covered within labs and clinical placement. The module will also cover all aspects of the use, supply and selling of drugs under exemptions legislation. The teaching and learning strategy will be to encourage students to synthesize and develop the basic theoretical basis for the management of binocular vision anomalies in such a way as to allow them to apply the knowledge, in a clinical environment, to a variety of patent types. Students will be encouraged to develop their problem solving strategies and techniques to a level which will allow than to adopt a structured reflective approach to the clinical environment. Blended learning will allow flexibility to content delivery. Guest lecturers will be utilized to highlight practice in unique role development such as the use of exempt dugs in orthoptic practice
