Summary of Content

The module will extend the students' knowledge of sleep physiology and assessment of basic sleep disorders. It will extend the students ability to analyse, interpret a range of lung function tests and evaluate treatment options .


Sleep physiology: Circadian rhythm, diurnal rhythm, effects of shift work and jet lag, Respiration and gas exchange during sleep, use of pulse oximetry in simple sleep studies and overnight studies. Pathophysiology Sleep physiology: Use of domicillary screening, Pulse oximetry for sleep screening, Recognition of Obstructive sleep apnoea, Intrepretation of overnight sleep screening and pulse oximetry studies. Lung Function: Pathophysiology in lung diseases and effects on lung function: Intrathoracic, Extrathoracic, Restrictive, Hypoxaemia, Hypercapnia, Hyperventilation, Cardiac disease, PE, Smoking, Occupational diseases Pharmacology: Hypersensitivity, Airway reactivity in EIA and challenge testing, Inflammation, Bronchodilators, Antibiotics, Steroids and Drugs affecting lung function. Challenge testing: Yan, dosimeter & tidal breathing. Methods of assessing airway activity. Indications and contra-indications for performing the tests. Safety precautions during testing and safe handling of reagents. Graphical representation of results & interpretation. Sleep Studies: Overnight oximetry, sleep staging, indications for complex studies, Interpretation of results, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, Other sleep related disorders, Epworth scores, DVLA regulations, concepts of full polysomnography. Interpretation of results: -567 Full lung function tests, Flight assessment, LTOT, Pulse Oximetry, Respiratory muscle function, Challenge testing. For special topics, students can choose to study 2 from the following list (not previously selected in year 3): Unit 1: Psychopharmacology Unit 2: Neuropathophysiology and therapeutics Unit 3: System Pathophysiology and Pharmacology 1 - Cardiovascular system Unit 4: System Pathophysiology and Pharmacology 2 - Respiratory and GI systems Unit 5: System Pathophysiology and Pharmacology 3 - Pulmonary system

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:1. Evaluate the contribution of advanced respiratory function tests in the assessment of patients2. Demonstrate an ability to assess a patients requirements in basic sleep disorders3. Discuss and critically evaluate the results of sleep studies4. Evaluate the effects of therapeutic intervention in the care of patients with respiratory disorders5. Critically appraise the results of advanced respiratory function tests performed on patients.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The specialist module material will be delivered mainly by senior NHS Practitioners, clinicians and consultants via a combination of lectures and tutorials together with directed learning exercises, practical problems and data interpretation. Lectures will provide the foundation material for the module which will be supplemented and enhanced by material presented in tutorials and practical sessions. Tutorials will also allow practical applications of individual topics to the students' own work experience to be examined and discussed. Special topics will be delivered by research active GCU staff.
