Summary of Content

This module will provide the opportunity for students to consolidate and apply their research knowledge and skills. In undertaking a project, students will engage in independent learning using established or novel methods of research inquiry to explore a topic of relevance to professional practice. Students will be expected to demonstrate creativity and originality and develop new evidence in their chosen topic area. The Project can be completed by undertaking an in-depth empirical study or a systematic literature review.


Whilst there is no formal syllabus for the Project module, a briefing session will be provided. Students will be supported to identify and address their personal and professional development needs throughout the project by their supervisory team.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:1. Critically apply a range of search strategies to identify literature related to the area of interest 2. Provide a critical overview of the selected area of interest that includes a critical understanding of the principal theories, principles and concepts.3. Manage the project independently taking into account the financial, legal, ethical, safety and logistical issues.4. Apply/ use appropriate methods of data analysis and present findings in a succinct format.5. Critically evaluate the project findings within the context of previous literature and identify their original contribution to the evidence base.6. Critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of the project.7. Produce a research article appropriate for submission in a peer reviewed journal that includes appropriate recommendations for research, policy and/or practice.8. Communicate project findings in a scientific conference style presentation.9. Communicate project processes and findings succinctly and with clarity and defend decisions.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The Project module is characterised by independent study meaning that students are responsible for directing their learning journey and resources in conducting the research project. Consequently, the teaching and learning strategy centres on supporting and facilitating effective independent learning. In this context, there will be an introductory briefing session that will provide a forum for clarifying expectations. Students will be signposted to relevant research and academic development opportunities, e.g. workshops provided Learning Development Centre. Academic support will be provided by two designated academic supervisors whose role is to advise and guide the doctoral student. Students are entitled to a maximum of 18 hours support from their supervisory team, which may be face to face, telephone, video-conferencing or e-mail.
