Summary of Content

This module introduces the key principles, processes and techniques involved in creating motion graphic sequences for screen media. Students will explore and apply creative techniques for motion graphics using an appropriate range of digital production methods. They will explore and evaluate historical and contemporary motion graphics practice. Students will apply knowledge and practical software skills gained in the design, planning and creation of a short motion graphics sequence and folio of motion graphic techniques.


Key principles Visual communication utilising time, motion and space; motion literacy; choreography of visual elements, rhythm/pattern, colour, contrast Motion Graphics Techniques Keyframe Animation, Compositing, Layers, Camera Tracking, Motion Tracking, Masks Chroma and Alpha Keying, 2D and 3D space. Lighting, Rendering, Special Effects. Technical Issues: File formats, resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, consideration for outputs Production Processes: Research, Conceptualisation, Design, Storyboarding, Preparation of Assets, Animatics, Compositing, Audio Synchronisation, Production planning and workflow, Post Production Motion Graphics in context Historical and contemporary motion graphics Titling & Kinetic Typography Screen media: Broadcast TV, film, advertising, idents

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:1. Recognise and apply the key principles and techniques in the creation of motion graphic sequences 2. Demonstrate knowledge of production processes and technical issues for motion graphics3. Design, plan and create a short motion graphic sequence using appropriate digital production methods4. Evaluate examples of motion graphics practice designed for a range of screen based media and purposes5. Critically evaluate their own work with respect to quality and professional standards

Teaching / Learning Strategy

-46 The University 'Strategy for Learning' documentation has informed the learning and teaching strategy for this module. The module material will be introduced through lectures, while practical exercises will be offered to students for sessions in digital design studios equipped with industry standard software. Seminars will be used to review students' work in group and peer feedback sessions and help clarify and elaborate on both the lecture material and the practical exercises. Full use will be made of GCU Learn to provide lecture-based and related study materials, along with sample solutions of seminar and practical exercises, thus encouraging the development of independent learning and allowing self-reflective feedback on student performance. Staff-based feedback on student performance for submitted work will be provided in line with the University feedback policy, with summative feedback and grades on the coursework assessment utilising GCU Learn. The additional interactive discussion features of GCU Learn may be utilised, as appropriate to the module, to stimulate independent and flexible student learning outwith scheduled class time. Practice based exercises in digital media studios to include group interaction and individual practice in motion graphic production techniques. In the studio environment, students will be expected to meet interim deadlines for design and planning and share their digital practice with peers. Individual independent study, practice, and directed learning will be utilised. Formative tasks, tutor/peer critiques are integrated into the learning process. VLE (GCU Learn) will be used to disseminate course materials with supporting notes, assignments, exercises and external web links to professional practice and online tutorials. Lectures require A/V projection equipment for PC, DVD, video display and internet access.
