Summary of Content

Understanding the principles of contract administration under the Joint Contracts Tribunal 98 form. This will be supplemented by case law. An introduction to adjudication and associated legislation.An introduction to financial management in the construction sector with particular attention to cash flow and investment decisions.


Management contracting, construction management, and design and build procurement routes. Further study of JCT 98 form including more advanced variations, fluctuations, payment, testing, domestic and nominated subcontractors and suppliers, the duty to complete, extensions of time, loss and/or expense, and liquidated damages. An introduction to adjudication. Contemporary developments in case law and legislation. The concept of capital, costs and availability of finance, construction costs, bidding strategy, investment appraisal decisions, life cycle costing, cash flow, insolvency.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, the student should: -have an understanding of the operation of the JCT form of contract and contract administration under alternative procurement routes-be able to carry out discounted cash flow computations, and - be able to read and interpret a company accounts and balance sheet.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The basic material will be delivered by flexible learning material including lecture notes, case studies, and worked examples. Keynote lectures, examples classes, and seminars will back this up. Some seminar material will delivered via the web.
