Summary of Content

The main aim of the module is to enable students to develop an understanding of theories underpinning the development and implementation of management strategy. Students will reflect on key concepts, issues and debates relating to the development and role of organisational values, objectives, strategies and policies. They will evaluate the effectiveness of strategic control models/systems commonly used within organisations to implement strategy in terms of delivering both business excellence and ensuring an appropriate health and safety environment. The module also requires students to study the formal and informal functioning of organisations, and to reflect on the skills and behaviours required to effectively practice their professional role within the organisational context.


The organisational context - vision, mission statements and values. Business ethics and corporate social responsibility. The planning process; levels of planning, strategic, functional and operational strategies; deliberate 'v emergent strategy. The control process and systems of control, performance targets/indicators, behavioural impact of performance measurement, role of balanced scorecard. Business Excellence, quality systems and standards. Organisational learning - knowledge management. The formal organisation - structural forms [functional, divisional, matrix, team-based, network] and redesign issues, the learning organisation; inter- and intra-organisational communications/relationships; The Informal Organisation - organisational culture, organisational power and influence - the ethical boundaries - minimizing dysfunctional organisational politics; effective use of impression management behaviour (visibility, social capital, networking and political skills); assertiveness and conflict management.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:1. To critically reflect on the role of organisational mission, vision and values;2. To appraise accounts of the process of strategic and operational planning;3. To critically evaluate the effectiveness of strategic control systems prevalent in organisations;4. To critically assess organisational structure and culture; 5. To develop an understanding of the efficacy of power and influence as practiced within an organisational context;6. To critically reflect on skills, actions and practices associated with professional effectiveness within an organisational context.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The module is based upon an interactive lecture and seminar programme. Emphasis is placed on the link between theory and practice and students are required to reflect and share their experiences of management strategies and management practices/actions, identifying and learning from good practice where found and critically reflecting on ineffective organisational practice. Students are required to undertake a programme of specified readings from books, journal articles and case studies for seminar discussion and to participate in assessed online 'GCULearn' activities to build a personal portfolio of their learning and non-assessed, formative online module discussion boards to facilitate information gathering and learning between students for group assessment purposes. Assessing the application of theoretical debates in management and organisational studies to issues and problems in organisational contexts, encourages students to become active and reflective professionals. Students are encouraged to critically appraise the research publications, relate the methods described to good practice guidance, and evaluate practical implications of the outputs. This allows the students to think of their own challenges in research terms and prepares them for future dissertation work.

(e) Learning: A range of cognitive skills, from logical reasoning to problem solving, decision making and self-reflection will be developed from undertaking organisational research and formal assessment. (f) Data Gathering, Manipulation and Presentation: These skills are developed as students make use of primary and secondary resource material. Students will use and further develop library skills to find and organise information, as well as utilising information technology for the production of coursework and durin g participation in online module activities and discussion boards.
