Summary of Content

Participation in the INTERACT multidisciplinary design team competition with architecture and structural engineering students from other HE institutions Design Appraisal: early cost advice, pre-tender cost control, forecasting, cost modelling, life cycle costing.

Syllabus

Cost modelling: cost forecasting practice and the methods of assessing price level. Databases and forecasting models: their background and use in cost control. The cost control function within the design process. Life cycle costing: cost comparison and sensitivity to variables.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, student should be able to:1. Demonstrate familiarity with broad areas of knowledge of technology and cost.(QS A1, A2, A3, A4, A6)2. Demonstrate a problem-solving approach to issues raised during the development of project design solutions, with consideration of all team members' perspectives. (QS A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6)3. Incorporate regulatory requirements into problem solving and reports. (QS A1, A2, A4, A6, B1, B2, B5, B6, C1, C2, C3, C4, C6)4. Demonstrate a professional ethical approach to team dynamics and problem resolution, through negotiation, role, leadership and team support skills. (QS B1, B2, B3, B5, C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C65. Select appropriate ICT applications for cost procedures and problem-solving and present results clearly. (QS A2, A5, B2, B3, B4, B5, C1, C2, C4, C5)6. Explain how team interaction affected the development of project design. (QS B2, B3, C1, C6)7. Develop ability to use appropriate principles and procedures with minimal supervision. (QS A2, A4, A5, B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, C1, C2, C3, C4)8. Develop ability to assess tender price levels. (QS A2, A3, A4, A5, B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, C1, C2, C3, C4)9. Demonstrate the ability to select, measure and apply suitable data forcomparison purposes. (QS A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, B1, B2, B4, B5, B6, C1, C2, C3, C4)10. Apply life cycle cost comparisons to design solutions. (QS A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, B1, B2, B4, B5, B6, C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6)

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The INTERACT design team competition for architecture, quantity surveying, and engineering students; simulation professional experience; team surgeries and presentations. Introductory lectures provide basic supporting concepts which will be complimented by tutorials and 'drop-in' workshops. Students will have access to the University and School libraries and resource facilities.
